Historically, the borders of County Durham were between the river Tyne and the river Tees. Nowadays it is bounded by Tyne and Wear to the north east, Northumberland to the north, Cumbria to the west, and North Yorkshire to the south.

During the Middle Ages, the county was an ecclesiastical centre, due largely to the presence of St Cuthbert's shrine in Durham Cathedral. The county has a mixture of mining, farming and heavy railway heritage, with the latter especially noteworthy in the southeast of the county, in Darlington, Shildon and Stockton. In more recent times it has become an area of regeneration and promoted as a tourist destination; Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral are a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site.

If you'd like to make the most out of the region's history and religion there are numerous castles, cathedrals and churches available as wedding venues. Redworth Hall is a good example of an historic castle with period features dating back hundreds of years, plus impressive grounds.

Other options include hotels and pubs. The South Causey Inn is so popular it has recently built a barn exclusively for wedding use to increase their capacity.

Being based in Newcastle is ideal for me because I can reach most wedding venues in Durham by car within an hour.
