NORTHUMBERLAND WEDDING VENUES

Northumberland is the northernmost county of England and one of my favourite places on the planet.

It just has so much variety - from 64 miles of wild North Sea coast, to high moorland (most of which protected by Northumberland National Park), to dense and ancient woodland. It's the least densely populated county in England and it's this remoteness and opportunity for solitude, that I love.

Northumberland is home to many stately homes such as Ellingham Hall and Linden Hall. These are impressive country piles with large and immaculately kept grounds. Venues such as Newton Hall, Woodhill Hall and le Petit Chateau offer a modern and quirky take on the traditional stately home, with unusual furnishing and a sense of daring and fun.

The area also has more low key, alternative venues such as Northside Farm and The Barn on the Bay. Farms, barns and glamping (think yurts, teepees and tents) wedding venues are increasingly popular and are places I like to photograph. They are ideal for the sort of bride who'd rather wear hiking boots than high heels on her wedding day!

Northumberland is a dream playground for engagement and pre-wedding couples shoots. The Northumbrian coast offers the perfect minimalist backdrop with the chance of dramatic sunrises and sunsets. Many of the beaches are overlooked by castles such as Bamburgh or Dunstanburgh. Closer to home, Tynemouth beach is overlooked by the Priory which was founded in the 7th century.

Kielder Forest has tall trees and dense woodland, all surrounding the reservoir which is the largest artificial lake in the UK. Kielder is a Dark Sky Park, which means that it is free from light pollution and is perfect for star gazing.

Northumberland is an ideal location for adventurous outdoors couples who want to experience the north's rugged beauty.

A DIY outdoor wedding by the sea

Ellie & James did their wedding, their way.

They should have no regrets. DIY flowers, paper cranes.

Oh, and did I mention that the bride and groom ended up in the sea?

There were two things I remembered when leaving Izzy and Rob’s initial consultation. The first was how cute and cuddly Eze the sausage dog was. The second was the love that was clearly evident between Rob and Izzy.

Their wedding would be intimate and deeply felt. Meaningful in a way that, perhaps surprisingly, not all weddings are.
