Woodhill Hall is a luxury Northumberland wedding venue situated on a private 100 acre estate of woodland and meadow, near the village of Otterburn in Northumberland. I recently had the good fortune of staying there as part of Kat and Alan's three day wedding extravaganza, and this is my review.
This is your first view of the Hall as you drive along the tree lined drive.
Woodhill Hall itself is a 300 year old detached Georgian country manor that can provide accommodation for up to thirty guests.
In the past, there have been numerous renowned visitors to Woodhill Hall including Abel Chapman (1851- 1929), the famous Victorian explorer, writer, naturalist and founder of the Sabi Game reserve and one of the master minds behind the creation of the Kruger National Park, South Africa.
Evidence of Abel Chapman’s occupation remains to this day with the display of the Narwhals horn, given by him to Miss Jane Gow whom he subsequently married on the 28th September 1885 at St Cuthbert’s Church, Elsdon.
Woodhill Hall has lot to offer nature lovers from peace and tranquillity to an abundance of wildlife - there are 100 acres of grounds to explore - so bring your walking boots and wellies. There is a bird hide and a pond in the meadow where guests can enjoy viewing the local wildlife such as badgers to deer, foxes, curlews and birds of prey.
Woodhill Hall is now owned and run by Corrinne, who has overseen its development from a family home to a bespoke, boutique wedding venue in the space of four years.
Woodhill as a business and it’s physical development has evolved over the years. The Hall is filled with an eclectic mix of furniture, accessories and paintings which Corinne has enjoyed collecting from auctions and her travels. She enjoyed searching out interior design ideas and looking for quirky things for the Hall.
There are three rooms licensed for marriages at Woodhill Hall. The Hall allows the bride to enter via a stunning staircase but is only suitable for intimate weddings of 20 guests. The dining room, with its imposing chandelier and original wood panelling, can take up to thirty guests.
Most weddings take place in the Orangery. This room is beautifully light and airy and has space for up to 100 guests.
This room is also used for the wedding breakfast, and can take up to 80 guests, although up to 120 guest in total can be catered for by using the adjoining dining room.
Even larger weddings of up to 150 guests can be catered for with a marquee set up in the grounds.
The marquee is pitched in the grounds of Woodhill Hall, very close to the main building itself, so it essentially becomes another large room that can be used on the wedding day. It means that even if the weather is poor, your guests will only have to be outside for a very short time as they move between the house and the marquee.
Most couples have a weekend wedding and have exclusive use of the entire site for two nights. Woodhill hall is not a hotel, so there won't be any other guests complaining about how late you stay up partying! As they are not catering for other guests, they can be very flexible in their arrangements, which means that you can make your own wedding there truly unique. You also won't bump into another bride on your big day.
Every bedroom is different, in size, shape and decor. Over two floors, you'll find original wooden-beamed ceilings, jacuzzis, fireplaces and shabby chic vintage furniture in an eclectic mix.
The Love Shack
Corrine is always updating and creating new ways to help her guests have their perfect wedding. Never short of ideas, Corinne decided to commission a luxurious shepherd hut for her happy couples to stay in on their wedding night.
The 18ft long hut was to come complete with shower and wc, downlighters, sockets and cream enamel wood burning stove. Internally the hut was painted in a Farrow and Ball soft white, externally Corinne chose a mixture of larch cladding painted in F&B Mizzle with contrasting cedar shingles and off white painted corrugated roofing, the stable door and window frames were F&B Brassica. The wheels for this hut were based on a traditional petal design and all ironmongery painted black
Externally the hut has a fairytale quality to it, internally Corinne has put her own unique stamp on the hut, it’s vibrant, fun and original - what a great way to start married life!
The BBQ Lodge holds up to 30 people. It has an open fire in the centre and seating around the edge, covered in cushions and throws. It's a great place for a few drinks and perhaps a cigar on the night before your wedding.
Woodhill Hall is a photographers dream! Despite the eclectic and disparate nature of the Hall, the marquee, the love shack and the BBQ Lodge, are all situated very close to each other, so there won't be any trailing over muddy fields over the course of the day. Having said that, there are 100 acres of woodland and meadow at your disposal, so you have the opportunity to get some truly stunning photographs if you are willing to put in some effort - and possibly put on some wellies!
Speaking of wellies, if the weather is poor, then you may be restricted to the interior of the hall for photography, which would yield some limited couple portraits and very tight group shots.
- Well placed in the Northumberland countryside offering spectacular views and great opportunities for photography.
- Exclusivity and freedom. The entire site is yours for two nights so you are free to do what you please.
- Woodhill Hall is a truly unique wedding venue, so you can guarantee that your wedding will be just a little bit different.
- Bad weather will limit your options, especially regarding photography.
- The decor is very quirky and eclectic and won't suit those looking for a more traditional wedding venue.
- The venue is isolated, with no phone signal to speak of and very limited wifi. This may be a pro or con, depending upon your point of view and how much you rely on your smartphone!
If freedom is what you are after, then Woodhill Hall is the place for you! You have the run of the place, so you can arrange your wedding day exactly the way you want. You're in the heart of the Northumberland countryside which means spectacular views, and great opportunity for photography, but no phone signal.
Woodhill Hall is a great example of a modern wedding venue offering something different than more traditional country wedding venues.
