A Relaxed Cumbria Wedding with Katy & Martin
I'm a little late with my blogging as I have been too busy photographing weddings to talk about them. In fact, I am photographing two weddings this weekend - one at Ellingham Hall in Northumberland, and another at the South Causey Inn in Durham.
The wedding I would like to talk about today is that of Katy and Martin. They were married in Carlisle, Cumbria, which is a little out of my normal patch of Newcastle upon Tyne and Northumberland.
It's often the case that the bride and groom get ready in separate locations, miles away from each other, so I am restricted to photographing the bridal preparation or the groom preparation. The bridal prep usually wins out, so the poor groom gets forgotten about. For Katy & Martin's wedding, though, they were getting ready across the street from each other, so I got to meet Digger the dog and walk to the ceremony venue with these cool dudes.
The ceremony took place at Lady Gillford's House, which is owned by Carlisle Register Office. After the ceremony we all piled on the bus to the reception at the Tithe Barn. It is owned by St Cuthbert's Church, and is thought to have been built over 500 years ago in 1480. It functioned as a barn until the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII, and then as a stable, dispensary, dwelling house, and joiner's shop. Semi derelict by 1970, it was purchased and restored by St Cuthbert's Church and has been used as the Church Hall since then.
Apparently, the street adjoining the barn where I photographed Katy and Martin, was a haunt of 'ladies of the night' in years gone by!
There were loads of children at the wedding and Katy and Martin had arranged for a face painter to keep them entertained during the day. Of course it wasn't long before the adults got involved...
I stayed long enough to photograph Katy and Martin's first dance, and some of the guests partying on the dance floor, before packing up for the long drive home.
Katy and Martin left this very kind review on my Facebook Photography page:
The pleasure was all mine. If all Cumbrian weddings are as fun as this I'd love to photograph some more!
