I met Tanya and Craig at a wedding fair in Newcastle upon Tyne. When Tanya told me all about her plans to marry at Newton Hall in Northumberland I was thrilled to become her wedding photographer and couldn't wait to photograph this unique venue for the first time.
Newton Hall is on the North East coast, near Alnwick. It's tagline is 'Bold, Romantic and Fantastical,' and it certainly lived up to that billing for Tanya and Craig's wedding. It is the antidote to the traditional English country house wedding - it's a rambling 18th century Northumberland house, filled with quirky character. It's not a typical hotel, and when you book it for a wedding it's exclusively yours, so you won't be bumping into golfers or other guests.
It's not just the building or the location, though, the staff are numerous, knowledgable and helpful. I knew this from experience having attending dozens of weddings at As You Like It in Newcastle, another wedding venue owned by the Apartment Group, that also owns Newton Hall.
I had photographed Tanya and Craig’s pre-wedding shoot on the North East coast a few months before the wedding, which meant that we had already built up some trust and understanding, so we hit the ground running on the wedding day. It was damp and wet early in the morning as you can see in the first few photographs, but once the sun got out it burned the fog away and the weather was just perfect.
Tanya and Craig put a lot of thought and effort into making their wedding unique and meaningful to them. The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter themes were woven into the day, especially visible in the signs and table dressings (many of which Tanya made herself).
The whole day was bold, romantic and fantastical indeed!
It takes a lot of people working together to make a great wedding. Here's a link to everyone who collaborated on Tanya and Craig's wedding:
