Coniston Lake District Wedding Photography with Julia & Darren
Julia and Darren were married on a glorious, sunny day near Coniston water in the Lake District.
The run up to the wedding had me worried, though.
I always scout wedding venues I haven't photographed before, and I'd never been to Monk Coniston Hall. I drove over from Newcastle on a Saturday three weeks before the wedding to meet the wedding organiser and get a feel for the location. The rain began as I drove past Hexham and the wind increased the further west I drove. By the time I reached the Lake District it was raining sideways.
The meeting with the organiser at the wedding venue went well anyway, and I found out that the ceremony was taking place in a traditional Lakeland slate barn, full of character with exposed wooden beams. Perfect.
I then drove down to Coniston water itself, where the reception was taking place afterwards. I was driven away from the water's edge by driving rain. A marquee was to be set up in a field for the wedding. If the weather was anything like that of my scouting trip it would be a washout.
I was supposed to be photographing Julia and Darren at sunset for their pre-wedding session and we had to cancel the session.
On the week leading up to the wedding I nervously checked the weather forecast and rain was predicted every day.
Then, miraculously, the sun broke through the clouds on the morning of the wedding and we had a beautiful sunny day!
The marquee worked out just fine, and we were able to get down to the water's edge to take photos as the sun was going going down. It turned out to be a relaxing, chilled day. Plus Darren was thrown into the lake by his guests!
It was amazing to experience both extremes of the Lake District in what was supposed to be the height of the British summertime, and I'd love to do it all over again with another adventurous couple.
