The Vermont Hotel is a venue I am very familiar with, having conducted dozens of weddings there over a ten year period. It was a popular wedding venue in Newcastle upon Tyne, but it became tired over the years and it's popularity waned. In recent years it has once again regained it's position as one of the top wedding venues in the city.
I met Tanya, the wedding co-ordinator at The Vermont Hotel, a few days ago ahead of two upcoming weddings I am photographing there. I only had limited time to take some test shots, and the rooms were not set up for a wedding, so you won't get a true sense of the venue with my photographs. I'll update this review with some real wedding photographs later.
The Vermont Hotel was built in the 1930's which it's art deco architecture conveys perfectly. It wouldn't look out of place on a New York street corner. It began life as Northumberland County Council Offices, then was converted into a four star hotel in 1993. When the original owners went into receivership in 2012, the new owners invested £3m to restore the hotel to it's former glory. It is now plush and stylish, and oozes contemporary class.
Few hotels can boast a more enviable city centre postcode than the Vermont Hotel. It is located in the heart of the City of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, not only next to the Castle Keep and opposite the historic Moot Hall, but also just two minutes from Newcastle's Central Station. It boasts stunning views over the River Tyne, Millennium Bridge or stunning cathedral.
As well over 100 bedrooms and suites, The Vermont Hotel also provide areas for meetings, conferences and events. The Vermont Hotel is also a superb Wedding Venue in Newcastle.
Weddings at The Vermont Hotel
The Sky Lounge & Garden at the The Vermont Hotel
When the hotel was recently refreshed, the big draw in regards weddings was the Sky Lounge & Garden. You can get married in the Sky Lounge, which can realistically hold around 80 guests, and then walk out onto the roof of the building with stunning views of Newcastle's Quayside and Historic City.
The Ballroom at The Vermont Hotel
The Ballroom, once The County of Northumberland Council Chambers, combines the grandeur of oak panelled walls with beautiful bespoke art deco windows depicting The Heritage of Newcastle's industries. There is a balcony overlooking the room, where the press used to sit during council meetings.
The recently refurbished Redwood Bar and Lounge offers opulence and comfort, with traditional service and direct access to the neighbouring Castle Keep and also available to guests of The Vermont Hotel for Wedding photographs and private drinks receptions.
Wedding Photography at The Vermont Hotel
The Vermont Hotel is a great venue for photography. A wedding in the Sky Lounge & Garden will offer 360 degree views of the city skyline and the opportunity to get some breathtaking photographs during the day and at night.
The art deco inspired interior, now rich and opulent following it's refurbishment, also has a lot to offer, regardless of the weather.
There are also several photogenic landmarks on the doorstep of the hotel; The Moot Hall, the Castle Keep (Newcastle's castle) and the High Level Bridge, are all locations I'd take a couple for portraits on their wedding
- The Vermont Hotel is in a truly excellent location; right in the heart of Newcastle, in close proximity to all of the major tourist attractions.
- The recent renovation of The Vermont, particularly the Sky Lounge & Garden, coupled with the classic art deco style of the building, make for a unique and classy wedding venue.
- Parking at the venue is severely limited. However, you can hire a chauffer Rolls Royce Phantom at reduced rates if you are getting married at The Vermont, and then let the driver worry about finding a parking space!
