The Caledonian Hotel, Jesmond is a venue I'm very familiar with, having photographed two weddings there so far, and conducted dozens of weddings there as a registrar.
Read on to find out why it is one of the most popular wedding venues in Newcastle.
Constructed in 1870, the Caledonian Hotel displays classic Georgian architecture. A recent extensive refurbishment combines this facade with a more contemporary interior. Wooden flooring, leather sofas and low level lighting feature in the public areas, while the bedrooms are styled with bright modern decor.
The Caledonian Hotel is situated in Jesmond, one of Newcastle's most popular suburbs and Newcastle City Centre is only a mile away. Osborne Road is brimming with restaurants, bars and stylish boutiques and is characterised by its cosmopolitan vibrancy within laid back residential surrounds.
By contrast, less than half a mile away from the hotel is Jesmond Dene, a popular park set in a picturesque wooden valley.
Weddings at The Caledonian Hotel
There are several rooms licensed for weddings at the Caledonian Hotel, but virtually every wedding ceremony I have attended there, in my capacity as a wedding photographer or as a registrar, has been held in the Avon Suite.
This is a long narrow room that can hold around 100 guests. The shape of the room means that even if you have a smaller wedding party for the ceremony, your guests won't feel lost in a larger space. It also means that there is a relatively long aisle for the bride to walk down.
There are a total of seven function rooms in the hotel, of varying sizes, so you and your guests can easily move around from one part of the hotel to another while each room is being prepared for it's next function.
The Caledonian Hotel has special wedding offers that bundle many of the things you have to organise for your wedding into one package, which makes your wedding easy to plan and budget for. This means that the hotel will arrange the ceremony room, wedding breakfast, drinks, flowers, table decorations, chair covers, favours, evening buffet, DJ, and rooms for one affordable price.
Wedding Photography at The Caledonian Hotel
The Caledonian Hotel is located on a busy street, surrounded by other businesses and residential homes, so photography on the premises is a bit limited. There are no real grounds at the front of the hotel to speak of, although I have sometimes used that space. You just have to brave the looks of passers by and the honking of car horns as you take photographs of the bride and groom!
A relatively new addition to the rear of the hotel is the 'secret garden.' This is reserved for wedding guests and features a small grassed area surrounded by flower beds, and a large area of decking with seating and patio heaters. Group photos can be taken out here, as well as some bride and groom portraits (as long as you are careful to shoot upwards and crop out the back alley!).
The best option for bride and groom portraits, if the couple are willing to take a chunk of time out of the day, is to hop in the car and take the short ride down to Jesmond Dene. It can offer a wide open spaces, a small waterfall and river which adds another dimension to your wedding photographs.
One thing I do have to especially mention here is the staff. They have organised a lot of weddings at the hotel and it shows in their professionalism; the day always runs like clockwork.
- Well situated in a popular and trendy suburb of Newcastle. Close to Newcastle City Centre and Jesmond Dene.
- Have affordable wedding packages that make your wedding planning easy.
- Limited scope for wedding photography on site. You have to be prepared to leave the venue for somewhere like Jesmond Dene, to get more expansive photographs.
