A New Year's Eve wedding at Le Petit Château with Alex & Sam
Alex & Sam chose to have their wedding at the fun and quirky Le Petit Château in Northumberland on New Years Eve. It was a special day and a brilliant way to end the year. I love getting up on the dance floor to get wild party photos.
And there's no wedding party like a New Year's Eve wedding party!
Alex and Sam are an adventurous couple. On their pre-wedding forest hike we explored Kielder Water. and we were keen to get outside on the wedding day too. Fortunately Le Petit Château is situated in the Northumberland countryside so even though the weather was cold and windy we could get some photos and have some laughs in the great outdoors.
The outside came inside too. Le Petit Château is a beautiful wedding venue as it is, but once The Garden Studio supplied their incredible flowers it became spectacular!
One of my favourite photographs I made that day, is the black and white portrait of Alex. She had just finished getting ready and was about to walk down the aisle and marry Sam.
The more weddings I have photographed the more I have understood that less is more. I’ve ditched the DSLR cameras for more discrete mirrorless cameras. I’ve swapped the zoom lenses for small prime lenses. It’s not about the tricks or the mountain of gear. What I’m drawn to is stripping that away, keeping things simple and direct, and making a connection. One of the reasons I'm loving black and white photographs at the moment is that it strips away the distraction of colour leaving the emotional content of the photo more prominent. And what emotion.
Alex is a remarkably beautiful person both inside and out, who has been through so much, supported by Sam. I hope that my photographs represent their day, not reflect my idea of what a wedding should be.
Northumberland is one of my favourite places to photograph, whether it is real weddings or engagement shoots. Check out my Northumberland weddings page to see more.
