The Barn on the Bay Northumberland Wedding Venue

I've travelled a lot. North America, Europe, Northern Africa. I've been to bustling cities and baking hot deserts. Despite all of that, only a thirty minute drive from my home, Druridge Bay in Northumberland is one of my favourite places on earth. That's why I was excited to learn about a new wedding venue opening there: The Barn on the Bay

History

The Barn on the Bay is run by Ali and Alison of Hemscott Hill Farm. It's a family run farm on the Northumbrian coast that offers accommodation in the form of campsites, a bunkhouse and a cottage. It wasn't long before couples started asking if they could be married on the farm, so in 2016 it became a licensed wedding venue.

This is no monolithic, chain hotel, production line wedding factory. Their whole ethos for weddings is ‘Your Wedding, Your Way’. The venue lends itself to couples who want to put their own stamp on their wedding day.

Weddings at The Barn on the Bay

The Barn on the Bay is a working farm and provides rustic barn weddings for laid back couples. It is a friendly, approachable and inclusive wedding venue that strives to make your day personal.

The team at Barn on the Bay is very flexible and have lots of different options for wedding durations, such as hosting your reception there, adding on accommodation that night, or hiring the venue for a full weekend. They also have summer options, winter options, large wedding or smaller wedding options, you name it, you can have it your way.

There are plenty of ways to make the space your own with a large barn, a smaller barn, a courtyard and paddock, an area in the dunes and a sandy beach.

The accommodation is varied. There is cosy bunkbarn sleeping 18 guests in 5 bedrooms, a holiday cottage with optional hot tub, Bell Tents, a Shepherd’s Hut and loads of camping areas.

As a working farm you'll be getting up close to the animals. Chickens will be pecking around the yard, sheep will be bleating in the fields and cows will be roaming the grassy dunes. You can even mingle with alpacas on your wedding day!

The Barn on the Bay is a quirky, boutique wedding venue. It really suits couples looking for an alternative wedding venue. People who love the outdoors or a festival vibe especially.

Wedding photography at The Barn on the Bay

The Barn on the Bay is an outdoor wedding photographer's dream! The proximity to the beach is a big draw. Some wedding venues claim they are on the coast but they are often a five or ten minute drive away which means you have to schedule a decent chunk of the day if you want to capture beach portraits. Here, the beach is literally a two minute walk from the farm, so if the moment takes you or the light suddenly gets interesting you can get down onto the sand, fire off a few shots, and be back at the wedding before anyone knows you've gone.

Away from the beach, the barn and farm itself is an interesting backdrop with lots of textures such as wood, stone, straw bales and rusting metal.

Pros

  • Complete exclusivity on your wedding day. You won't be bumping into guests from another wedding ceremony or rubbing shoulders with drunken strangers at the bar.
  • It's a working farm, real, raw and authentic - a million miles away from soulless, corporate wedding venues.
  • It's right on the Northumberland coast, in my opinion one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

Cons

  • Definitely suits the type of bride who'd rather wear hiking boots than high heels on her wedding day!

I visited the Barn on the Bay before the wedding season began on a windy and overcast spring day. It wasn't set up for weddings, and I'll return soon to take proper photos of the wedding spaces. In the meantime here is a gallery of photographs I took that give you the feel of the Barn on the Bay.
