Horton Grange Northumberland wedding venue

Horton Grange in Northumberland was introduced to me through Izzy and Rob. I photographed their wedding here on a wet and cold December day. You’ll see plenty of photographs from their wedding day sprinkled throughout this review, as well as photographs from other weddings.

Horton Grange is an elegant and intimate Grade II listed Country House set in 4 acres of beautiful grounds in Northumberland. The gardens are beautiful, with water features, lawns, flower beds and lots of hidden areas to explore. At night lamps and fairy lights light up the gravel paths.

Weddings at Horton Grange

Horton Grange is situated in the glorious Northumberland countryside, but is just a fifteen minute drive north of Newcastle city centre. It is an ideal venue for more intimate weddings - 40 daytime guests and 80 nighttime guests is about as high as you’d comfortably want to go.

Horton Grange itself is a Grade II listed Country House with a distinctive mix of contemporary and period decor. It’s best feature, in my opinion, is the four acres of carefully tended grounds. There is a water feature, sculptures, gazebos, seating areas located in hidden nooks and crannies, as well as traditional lawns and flower beds. Most people get married indoors in a very light and airy space with windows lining two entire walls, but you can also have a garden ceremony outside in the gazebo (weather permitting of course).

Horton Grange is a hotel and restaurant as well as a wedding venue so there are rooms available to guests and the food very good quality. It is an exclusive wedding venue, meaning that you won’t bump into other brides and grooms, golfers, or other hotel guests during your wedding.

Wedding Photography at Horton Grange

The exterior of Horton Grange offers almost unlimited possibilities for a wedding photographer. The sheer variety of the landscape has something for every type of couple, and add in the fairy lights and lamps at night and you are bound to get great couples portraits.

Inside, the story is not quite the same. Horton Grange isn’t a traditional Country pile with a grand staircase and towering windows. It’s much more quirky and low key. There are nice fireplaces, archways and other architectural features for couples portraits, but you’ll struggle to take large group photos inside - it’s just as well that Horton Grange appeals to more intimate weddings.

The main ceremony room is a different story. It’s high ceilinged, with white walls and a light wooden floor, and filled with light from the windows that line two walls. Even in foul winter weather there is enough light in here to shoot comfortably without flash.

Horton Grange is a venue that is best in good weather. Here it is on a wet day.

Pros

  • Beautiful grounds

  • Everything you need in one place - licensed for wedding ceremonies, good food for the wedding breakfast and rooms to stay in overnight

  • Exclusivity on your wedding day

  • Great location in the country but still very close to the city

Horton Grange isn’t on the grand scale of some other halls in Northumberland. Instead think intimate and quirky.

Cons

  • With the grounds being such a great part of Horton Grange’s appeal you are reliant on the weather

  • Only suitable for smaller, more intimate weddings - 40 people is ideal
